In part one of our blog series, we shared a few helpful tips on how to take care of your teeth while on vacation. From visiting your dentist before heading out of town to taking advantage of rest stops and using bottled water when necessary, taking care of your teeth while on vacation is just as important as when you’re at home. Wrapping things up in part two, here are a few more things that you can do to help your teeth stay healthy while you’re away from home.

Chewing Gum

Traveling can be a long and stressful experience, especially when accounting for all the factors that you can’t control. If you’re taking a vacation in your car, you can’t account for the amount of traffic that you’ll encounter, or when you’ll encounter it. You also can’t account for weather and other conditions that will make the drive take longer than you initially anticipated. If you’re flying, you have no control over flight cancellations or reschedulings. Because of this, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan, prompting you to sometimes cut corners. Just because your flight got delayed or you were stuck in traffic doesn’t mean that your teeth have to suffer, however. Vacation eating habits aren’t always ideal to begin with, and in many cases we grab things in a hurry that we probably wouldn’t otherwise, completely out of convenience. While we may not always be able to brush our teeth with the level of frequency that we usually do, chewing sugar-free gum can help offset some of those less-than-ideal eating habits that we may be partaking in while away from home. Carrying some in your carry on luggage or backpack will ensure that, if you can’t brush, you can at least chew some gum.

Maintain Your Regular Habits

Things aren’t always easy when you’re on vacation with the limitations placed upon what you can travel with, but ultimately, trying to maintain your regular brushing and oral hygiene habits while on vacation is the best option for you overall. Given, this isn’t always easy, but trying to keep up with it as best as you can will help you prevent any damage to your teeth while you’re having fun.

If you can’t completely replicate your regular dental hygiene routine while on vacation, don’t stress out too much. Do the best that you can, and when you return home, get back on track as soon as possible. If you did the best you can given the circumstances, you’ll likely not notice too much of a difference in your overall oral health. Getting back on your regular brushing, rinsing and flossing schedule will help keep your smile looking fantastic day in and day out.
