Gentle Dentistry

Are you anxious about seeing the dentist?

Millions of Americans experience dental anxiety. If you’re one of them, know that there’s nothing to worry about.

Whether you’ve had a bad experience at the dentist in the past or you’re embarrassed about having a strong gag reflex, Dr. Corpron cares about providing a comfortable, anxiety-free experience.

In fact, after your initial consultation and a discussion of your concerns, you might not even require sedation dentistry.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a branch of oral health care that uses various medications and anesthetics to help patients relax and feel comfortable during dental procedures such as oral exams, cleanings, and extractions.

At Blue Sky Family Dental, Dr. Corpron focuses on patient comfort and easing the anxiety that is sometimes associated with visiting the dentist.

To facilitate these goals, he also offers eye masks, comfort blankets, relaxing music, and access to streaming services, so you can receive the dental treatment you desperately need without feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or uncomfortable.

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

If you suffer from dental anxiety or simply hate visiting the dentist, you’re probably a good candidate for sedation dentistry. You might also benefit from sedation dentistry if you:

  • Have sensitive teeth
  • Have trouble sitting still
  • Have a low pain tolerance
  • Have a strong gag reflex

Dr. Corpron also recommends sedation dentistry for children who fidget or have trouble holding their mouths open for extended periods of time.

What types of sedation dentistry do you offer?

Blue Sky Family Dental does not offer full body anesthesia. However, they offer a full suite of sedation dentistry services, including:

Inhaled sedation

Inhaled sedation involves the use of nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.” You breathe in nitrous oxide through an oxygen mask, which helps you relax and feel at ease. Nitrous oxide doesn’t put you to sleep; you can respond to Dr. Corpron’s questions or commands, and the treatment wears off quickly. As a result, you can drive yourself home following your procedure.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation allows for deeper relaxation and in some cases, sleep. To access the benefits of oral sedation, you take a prescription medication like Halcyon® an hour or two prior to your appointment. Halcyon helps you feel drowsy while easing your nerves. You may lose consciousness, but Dr. Corpron can gently nudge you awake if necessary.

Local anesthesia

Local anesthesia involves Dr. Corpron injecting a numbing agent like Novocaine into your gums, tongue, or surrounding soft tissues. The pain-preventing properties of novocaine typically last between 30-60 minutes, so Dr. Corpron typically mixes it with epinephrine to extend the results. If you’re undergoing a minor procedure like a filling or wisdom tooth removal, you might benefit from local anesthesia.

What type of sedation dentistry will I benefit from?

To determine the type of sedation dentistry you’ll most benefit from, make an appointment at Blue Sky Family Dentistry.

Following an oral exam of your teeth and gums, review of your medical history, and discussion of your goals for treatment, Dr. Corpron can make recommendations that align with your unique situation.
