Help Your Child Understand the Dangers of Tobacco

Statistically speaking, the amount of adolescents that smoke is at an all time low. While this is certainly good news to report, this doesn’t mean that children aren’t still starting this dangerous habit. Growing from childhood into pre-adolescence is a time for discovery and exploring who you are as a person, and for some children, this means caving to peer pressure. Whether out of mere curiosity or feeling pressured by others to do so, cigarette smoking and tobacco use for many starts around pre-adolescence. Most people are probably aware of the many harmful effects that using tobacco products can cause, from bad breath to stained teeth to a plethora of tobacco-related health issues.

A great way to dissuade your children from using tobacco is to help them gain a better understanding of how harmful doing so can be. While you don’t need to resort to measures that are shocking, helping them see the variety of ways that tobacco can be harmful to them will help them think twice when someone offers them a cigarette. If your child never smokes, that’s one more dental issue that both you and they won’t have to worry about encountering.

Bad Eating Habits

Growing children need a balanced and healthy diet. From ensuring that they are drinking plenty of water, as well as getting plenty of vitamins and minerals from fruit, vegetables and other nutrient-rich foods, there are so many benefits that come from providing your child with a well-balanced diet. Sometimes, though, this is easier said than done. Busy work and school schedules sometimes mean that your family may not always be able to sit down together and enjoy a home-cooked meal. It’s times like this where things like fast food and processed foods replace foods that are healthier. While eating foods like these on occasion isn’t too problematic, coupling foods like these with sugary snacks, sodas and desserts can prove to be damaging to your child’s dental health. Making sure that your child is limiting the amount of sugary and starchy foods in their diet, as well as getting a good amount of healthy and nutritious foods are great ways to ensure that, aside from having a well balanced diet, that their teeth won’t suffer, either.
