In part one of our blog series, we talked about some of the things that you can do to help your child practice good oral hygiene this summer. From keeping up with their regular dental habits to wearing a mouthguard while playing sports, there are many things that you as a parent can do to ensure that your child will continue to practice good oral hygiene, despite all the hustle and bustle that comes along with summer. Wrapping things up in part two, here are just a few more summer dental tips for kids.
We understand—with the busy nature of summer also comes the convenience of not always eating the best. Long drives in the car or on a bus coupled with late night sleepovers and other fun adventures don’t always lend themselves to eating healthy, and sometimes the availability of healthy options can be scarce. Add up all the snacks, candy, soda and other junk food, though, and your child can experience a fair share of dental related issues in the future if they’re not careful. While a few treats here and there aren’t harmful, offsetting this with healthier options will help ensure that their teeth continue looking fantastic, regardless of the other dietary choices that they make. Snacking is incredibly common with kids, so offering them healthier snack choices will help promote the better overall treatment of their teeth. Things like apples, cheeses, and low fat yogurt are all great options to keep your kids satisfied this summer, and by incorporating these sorts of snacks into their diet, they’ll be able to offset those times when they reach for snacks that are of a less than healthy.
In addition to eating well, summer is also a time where kids have a tendency to enjoy their fair share of sugary beverages. While this is completely common, it’s important to make sure that they are drinking adequate amounts of water as well. Not only will this keep them hydrated and feeling great during those hot summer days, the benefits of water on your teeth are numerous. Helping them develop a taste for it will eventually find them reaching for their water bottle before a sports drink or soda.
Visit Your Dentist
Ultimately, there’s no better way to treat your teeth well this summer than to pay a visit to your dentist. Whether they’re heading to summer camp for a few months, or will be busy with other activities that will require them to be away from home for extended amounts of time, paying a visit to your family dentist will help you see if there are any issues that need to be addressed or monitored over time. If your children need to be practicing better brushing or flossing, or if they need to cut back on the sugary snacks, all of these things can be brought to your attention prior to their being gone over the summer. From there, you can take the necessary precautions to ensure that the problems are corrected. Let their camp counselors or trip chaperones know that they need to be paying special attention to their dental health, and provide them with the necessary tools and products they need to keep their smile looking fantastic.
