In part one of our blog series, we talked about a few things that you can do to help your child have beautiful and healthy teeth, from eliminating baby bottle tooth decay to avoiding thumbsucking. Wrapping it up in part two of this blog series, here are a few more things that you can do to encourage good dental habits for your children.
Make Brushing Fun
Like anything else, brushing your teeth is something that should become part of your daily and nightly routine. While this is something we’ve discussed in previous blogs on dental care for adults, children are still learning how to properly take care of themselves, so helping them establish a proper dental care routine from a young age will make things far easier for them as they grow up. Brushing your teeth doesn’t have to be a task, and you can make brushing your teeth fun for them. Establish a set toothbrushing time every morning and evening, so that your child understands that this is something that happens every day. Letting them pick out their toothbrush will get them excited to brush their teeth, and setting a timer for each brush session will make the process less of a task and more of a game.
Establish Healthy Eating Habits
We’ve detailed the harmful effects of various beverages on your teeth in a previous blog, and these rules apply to children as much as they do adults. Children’s eating habits are sometimes not as healthy as they could be, but a large part of that has to do with the availability of healthy options. Kids know how to open a bag of chips or a box of cookies, but they aren’t able to chop up vegetables, fruit or cheese when they are in need of a snack. It’s all a matter of convenience and availability with kids, and if you provide them with healthy options like fresh fruit and vegetables that’s accessible to them when they are feeling hungry, they’ll be doing both their teeth and taste buds a favor.
Keep Up With Dental Checkups
Like adults, children need to be seen by a dentist at least once or twice a year to ensure that their teeth are developing as they should. Keeping up with regular checkups and cleanings will make sure that, along with having a healthy dental routine at home, your child will be receiving the additional professional dental care that they need to maintain a healthy smile.
