Keeping your teeth in the best shape can sometimes be a challenge, especially for younger kids. From the generally unhealthy nature of junk foods that are marketed towards children to not taking proper care of their teeth, the dental related problems that kids can experience at a young age can cause problems for them as adults if they don’t practice good dental habits. In part one of this blog series, we will look at a few helpful tips for parents to help their children have healthy and beautiful teeth.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Dental issues in children can start when they are very young. A common issue amongst little ones is what is known as baby bottle tooth decay. Like regular tooth decay, baby bottle tooth decay is brought on by the use of baby bottles because of prolonged exposure to beverages that contain sugar. This can commonly happen if you put your baby to bed with a bottle, causing bacteria to develop in their mouth as they sleep. Everything from milk to baby formula can be a cause of this. If you must send your child to bed with a bottle, fill it up with water, as that will not be harmful to their teeth.

Avoid Thumbsucking

Thumbsucking is something that is common amongst most children, as it’s a way for them to transition from being bottle fed and relying on a pacifier. While some children tend to outgrow thumbsucking by a certain age, others have a more difficult time in breaking the habit. This habit can be harmful to your child as they develop, as thumbsucking has been known to cause problems with the proper growth and alignment of teeth. This can obviously lead to rather significant issues later on, so helping your child break the habit of thumbsucking as soon as possible will be incredibly beneficial to their overall dental health.
