How Invisalign Works
What Makes Invisalign® Technology Different And How Does It Work?
Invisalign was the first clear aligner system to replace the metal braces for orthodontic treatment. Since then clear aligner systems have become a mainstay of orthodontic treatment and for many patients it is no longer necessary to deal with metal wires and brackets. As the first and best researched clear aligner technology provider, Invisalign has made incredible advances over the years. Let’s talk about how Invisalign works and how it is different from both its peers and from traditional braces.
What is the Process for Getting Invisalign Clear Aligners?
At our office, Invisalign therapy begins only after we know the gums and the teeth are healthy. Then a 3D digital model of the teeth and how they come together is created using the iTero intraoral scanner. This, along with a comprehensive set of photos, allows Dr. Corpron and the Invisalign technicians to evaluate the bite. Then the dentist and the technicians collaborate to generate a plan using the Invisalign 3D digital ClinCheck software. The use of the photos, the 3D models, and the simulation ensure that each tooth’s movements are within safe limits and the predictability of the movement of each tooth can be assessed. Once an optimal plan has been reached, Dr. Corpron will sit down and consult with our patients to make sure they understand every step of the process, including the expected duration of treatment, limitations, and so on. Once the plan has been approved, the Invisalign clear aligners are 3D printed for the most accurate and most comfortable fit. After that, the patient receives their trays and treatment begins!
How do Invisalign Clear Aligners Work?
Invisalign clear aligners work by carefully directing gentle forces on each tooth. The clear tray material is designed to wrap around the crown of each tooth in order to allow for balanced movements throughout the mouth. Utilizing the patented SmartTrack material, Invisalign clear aligners maintain their elasticity and their memory longer than other generic materials, which allows the trays to more predictably move the teeth as planned. Each force and each movement is carefully planned using incredibly sophisticated 3D digital planning software.
Invisalign clear aligners are no longer made of simple thermoform plastic melted over plaster models. Invisalign clear aligners are now made from SmartTrack material. Invisalign researchers spent 8 years and tested over 260 materials tested before they discovered that SmartTrack material was the best. That’s miles above the alternative clear aligner systems and is one of may reasons Blue Sky Family Dentistry chooses Invisalign for your needs. This 3D printed material is more comfortable to wear, easier to take on and off, and gives greater control over moving your teeth. This allows Invisalign trays to move the teeth 50% faster and, maybe more importantly, tooth movements are 75% more predictable compared to other clear aligner materials.
From every 2 weeks to every week
When Invisalign clear aligners first came out the protocol was to wear the clear trays for 22 hours and for 2 weeks with each tray. That has now changed. Since the discovery of Invisalign’s patented SmartTrack material, each tray generally only needs to be worn for 1 week. It is also now possible to wear the trays while eating, effectively increasing the wear time which also increases predictability. Extremely complex cases may take as long as two years, but most patients will see amazing results in 6 months. That’s a huge improvement compared to traditional braces where the typical wear time is a minimum of two years and can even go on for up to 3 or 5 years. Correcting your bite shouldn’t be a burden. It should be something that fits your busy lifestyle.
