Quit Smoking

We’ve mentioned smoking quite a bit in many of our previous blog postings, but in addition to the many negative effects that smoking can have on a person, among them are a fair share of dental-related ones. From staining your teeth to causing things like gum disease, cigarette smokers are at a considerable risk of enduring a variety of different dental issues.

Another negative side effect that comes from cigarette smoking is bad breath. While cigarettes can cause bad breath for a variety of reasons, the most simple explanation has to do with cigarettes themselves. Whenever you smoke a cigarette, not all of the smoke particles leave your body when you exhale. Because of this, smoke particles can stay in your throat, lungs and mouth for hours after smoking. This also applies to other tobacco products like chewing tobacco. Even if you take proper care of your mouth with regular brushing and other routine oral care, the effects of smoking a cigarette can stay in your mouth for a considerable amount of time after the fact, causing you to have bad breath. Additionally, smoking cigarettes can cause your mouth to become excessively dry, and this itself can also be a cause of bad breath. While we don’t mean to target cigarette smokers, the negative effects of smoking are numerous. If you’ve considered quitting smoking for a while now, or have recently had the thought cross your mind, consider this yet another reason to do so.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine and cutting out bad habits can both be incredibly helpful in getting rid of bad breath, but much like most any other dental problem, maintaining good oral health on a consistent basis is not something that can be easily obtained on your own. One of the most effective ways to ensure that your teeth are looking their best is by visiting your dentist regularly for routine cleanings, checkups and x rays. Practicing proper oral hygiene on your own will put you in as best of a position possible before your appointment, but visiting your dentist regularly will help ensure that everything is as it should be, including things that you may not notice. Additionally. If you have a problem like bad breath, your dentist will be able to help determine as to what the specific cause of it may be.
